This is one of the last photoshoots from an awesome photographer and new friend Brittany Gray before she left Karmaloop for new adventures.  I'm sad for me but happy for her, while I may have lost my daily coffee buddy I have a fun new Boston friend, so overall I'll count that as a win.  As I type this I am in Singapore enjoying a 10 day best friend fest with two very important ladies who I don't get to see enough, one living in Singa, the other in Texas. From the moment we see each other it's like no time has passed and we are having a blast doing everything and nothing, which is what BFF's are best at. 

Over the last few weeks the old song I learned in Girl Scouts "make new friends but keep the old, one is silver the other gold" has been ringing very true.  There are a handful of new but quality Boston friends I've been fraternizing with, making Boston more of a home.  I am also continually in awe of all the digital ways to keep in touch with faraway friends; I'm not a phone talker but put me on any chat, skype, facetime, or even regular old text and you can't stop the chatter.  I've got silver and gold stashed all over the US and the world, making me feel very, very rich in friends, love and life.  Best feeling ever.

Working Girl

Long ago Working Girl was on TV and my Mom had me watch it with her.  I was probably 14 or so, early high school, the only thing I remember about the movie is thinking three things while watching it...


           1)  That HAIR is horrible, no one will EVER catch me with hair like that.
           2)  Shoulder pads, are you kidding me?  Please dear god never let those come back.
           3)  My hand on my Enzo Angiolini heels, I will NEVER wear tennis shoes to/from work.  
Flash forward 15 or so years and only one of those things remained true.  I'd like to think of it as a case of older-you-get-smarter-you-get syndrome.  I like my feet; they're kinda important and I want to take care of them.  They need to last me a looonnnnggg time, because I plan on using them to tour the world, walk my dog and get into whatever unpredictable stuff life throws my way for another good 50 years or so.  Who knows what other ways I will prove my younger self wrong by then!

Health is Wealth: Adventures in Vegan Baking


This is a photo of a vegan baking fuck up.  I now made two batches of vegan banana bread the first one being too moist almost bread pudding like and while it was delicious, it wasn't quite right.  The batch above was a different recipe and way, WAY to dry.  Both were bakers errors, the first one was edible, the second... not so much.  I hate wasting food, so I crumbled up the brick of bread and dried it out even more in a 200 degrees oven for an hour or so to make a nice crunchy and yummy cereal or topping, seen here over a chia breakfast bowl.  Viola!  Terrible banana bread saved and now I think I will be much more adventurous in the vegan baking with this new disaster cover up!

Minimalist Packing for Maximalist Dressers



Earlier this week I popped over to NYC for a trade show; it was a super short trip, just one night, but I'll take any time I can get there.  :)  I travel to trade shows often and at this company, more often than not, it is a short and sweet trip.  Due to all these quick trips,  I have honed my packing skills to only a small carry on.  I hate lugging luggage on a train and since I will be seeing old friends, obvi I want to look like me, bright and punky.
              
              Ingredients for an overnight trip:

              2 tops
              1 bottom
              1 set of accessories
              1 pair shoes
              1 set Jammies/under roos

I'm wearing one of the tops, the bottoms, accessories and shoes, so that leaves only the jammies and underpinnings to pack.  I still have plenty of room for a small makeup bag with pared down toiletries, reading material, ipad, and the regular handbag stuff.  

Protip: For one night, I don't even bother with all my creams and elixirs, just bare bones basics.  I even use the hotel soap for my face (the horror!).

Protip: Roll your clothes.  It saves space and keeps them less wrinkled.

Health is Wealth: Let's Get Physical

Let's Get Physical

Definitely NOT talking about the same sort of physical Ms. Newton-John is singing of, but I couldn't resist including the video, mainly for the mechanical man twerking at 0:13.  Go ahead, I'll wait...


Physical activity is about learning to hone into your body and what it is telling you.  It's about giving time yourself the gift of time, freeing yourself from the outside world.  As with most things in life, I prefer to dabble, to taste test, to dip my toe in the water, never fully committing to one thing or another. Therefore I'm not the best at sticking to anyone work out routine, but I have committed to keeping some sort of physical activity in my life on a daily basis.  

Right now the only activity I seem to be able to stick to is walking to and from work every day, an hour round trip.  Beaux comes to the office with me and most the route we walk along a dedicated green space with no car traffic, I try not to touch my phone to check email or instagram; I just enjoy the walk and breathe, look up, smile at people, appreciate the flowers, pet other dogs, etc.  THIS IS  A CHALLENGE FOR ME.  But it's important, I feel lighter when I do this.  

Over the years I've achieved a similar feeling of lightness from a variety of activities like visiting the gym on a regular basis, yoga classes, pilates, guided meditation, etc.  Some of my favorite online sources for guidance in physical activity are:

Random Abs-a FREE daily resource for an ever changing quick ab routine, get it emailed to you
Do Yoga With Me-a FREE resource for yoga classes, search by difficulty, class length, or style.  This is great for me because there is never the excuse of "my studio's schedule doesn't fit mine".
YogaGlo-similar to Do Yoga With Me, but a paid monthly subscription.  Sometimes paying means I'll actually do it.
Couch to 5k-this is a SUPERB way to start running, the premise is an 8 week program that stair steps you week by week from mostly walking to a full on 5k runner.  I am not a runner, I hate running, but sometimes I want to run and I love to hate it.  The C25K app is always on my phone reminding me of my love/hate relationship with running.  Countless times I have worked through it, felt accomplished, and then quit running, but that's my problem.  
My Fit Decision-I met Kristen of My Fit Decision at The Blogcademy workshop I attended in June, she is as sweet as she is spunky and I've found myself checking into her blog regularly for inspiration in my own health goals.  She has tons of food and fitness tips that are suitable for veg heads and meat eaters.

So that's my spiel.  I am in a much better place but still have to check in with myself, am I following my own advice?

New England Staycation

As I write this I am lingering and savouring the last of my Sunday, the last day of our New England staycation.  I have never staycationed before and I must say, it was quite lovely. We had leisurely mornings where I made vegan blueberry pancakes (9) from Oh She Glows, picked our activities based on the weather and explored areas new to me (everything) and even some new to NPR who has lived in the Boston area before.

The week consisted of a trip to Providence, RI with a tour of the RISD museum (14-18), took Beaux on a long nature walk that he LOVED in a beautiful reserve called World's End and there were BUNNIEHS (11-13)!!  We explored the Edward Gorey House Museum, a place where skeletons sit on chairs, creepy babies hang out in cups next to beautiful found glass and life size stuffed bears have their own stuffed bears to keep them company (1-8), in other words my dream house.  We drove along the business road of the Cape, stopping to play miniature golf and have ice cream in Yarmouth (19).  On the rainy days we visited the JFK Library and caught a matinee of Blue Jasmine with all the old couples of Cambridge.  In other words, it was pure, relaxing delight.
